If he is your best friend, you should already know what his hobbies and interests are. Maybe you should buy him something that is related to his hobbies and interests. Since he is going to be away for two years, maybe buy some kind of keepsake with your picture in it, like a locket, or something similar. When he gets lonely, depressed, frustrated, frightened, or confused, he can soothe himself by looking at your picture, and realize what a good friend he has....How's that for a good idea? That's what I would want if I was him....

He might like phone cards so he can call home. Maybe some pictures or a photo album, and stationery so he can write to people. Take him to dinner, the movies, whatever it is you like to do together, make some great memories. Then send him things he'll need and can use over there instead of giving him things he can't carry with him now.

From what I read, the men appreciate phone calling cards,CD's,DVD's and books. It takes up little space and weight and the men are grateful for anything that reminds them of home. You can ship toiletries, snacks candy and chewing gum later on.Send your friend letters to know how grateful we all are for what they endure for us.
