Seen a million of them, but I don't know what it actually does.

On H-D style V-twins, the engine and transmission are separate units, with the trans mounted to the frame behind the engine. The primary drive (can be either belt or chain drive) connects the engine to the transmission. The clutch is also part of the primary drive assembly.

The primary drive (either chain or belt) transfers the power (drive) from the engine to the transmission through the clutch.
The final (secondary) drive transfers the power from the transmission to the rear wheel.

It takes it's power from the crank shaft of the engine and turns the gears in the transmission.

That is what drives the transmission. It is connected to the engine/clutch output and to the transmission.
