I've had 4 hamster and none have lived longer than 3 months. I can't figure out what it is. The one's I have had, lived in "hamster mansions" with all the tubes and little rooms and everything, so there was lot's of room for them. I gave them the proper food, and proper water. I was sure I looked after them, but they all died. My first one died within the first month of having it. I always completely cleaned the cage before I got another one after one died, and I even got a new one when I bought another hamster after the third one died.
I thought it may be the heating or A/C being too high for them, but I don't see how that could affect them that much. I have always got them from the same pet store (except the 4th one) so maybe that has something to do with it?

I also have a Golden Retriver and the cage is way out of reach of the dog, but maybe the fur or something off the dog affects the hamsters breathing or something?

Also, When I found my 3rd one when it was dying, it was breathing slow and heavy and had a wet nose ... maybe that will give some clues as to what it may be?

man, i lost my 1st hamster 4 months ago. i will never get another one b/c I loved her so much. I had it for a year but I didnt know how old it was already, when it was left to me. I did research online and found some very interesting things. I found that they NEED SOME TYPE OF instrument to keep their teeth short or their teeth can grow into their brains. That just floored me. Make sure their water is fresh all the time. Cedar chips for hamsters are nice to repel ticks and fleas.
Feed them properly. they have sacs on the side of their mouths where they store food. Sometimes they store too much. Cage bar chewing can misalign their teeth. Get it hamster toys to keep it busy.

Make sure they have lots of space to run about in, and lots of things to play with. Even the simplest tissue box or toilet roll can really help. Make sure there isn't any plants near them which could be harmful, that might affect them. I don't know which ones a harmfull though, so just keep any plants away from them. But hamsters aren't the strongest of creatures, remember. Try asking your Vet, they might know the answer.

What the hell do you do to them. May be it's too cold in the house, and you might spray perfume on in the room which can affect your hamster. Ask a vet or a Pet Store. Or may be someone in your house kills them in purpose so you wont buy them anymore, I know that's cruel, but people actually do that. Or may be you don't know how to take care of your hamsters.

i have 2 hamsters at the moment but one of them got out last night iv had them for 9 months i don't think there sops to die as soon as they did for you so maybe you should go to the closest PET smart or vet clinic and ask someone how works there. The only thing i could think of being wrong is if you have something in the room that the hamsters cage in that all the hamsters are allergic to
good luck

does your dog stare at them all day? Terror could do something, maybe.
Did you clean the cages with bleach and then rinse them well afterwards?
Are you buying them from the same pet store- the pet store could be selling unhealthy animals?
Extreme changes in temperature or drafts could affect them as well. It is really hard to tell without being there.

Hamsters always run the wheel or play they wont die from it, they do however get a sickness called WET TAIL, it makes them die from the inside, kinda like cancer, if your feeding from the same bowel and the same cage it spreads from one to the other and they also get upper resp. infections from cedar shavings, don't use them and clean everything w/bleach and make sure they get air to breath fresh once in awhile, their is a medicine at the pet store for wet tail it goes in their water, always give it when you take them home, they need wood to chew on for their teeth, at Wal-Mart it's cheaper.

Maybe you didn't give them enough Vitamin C. They need that almost every day or else they will have a higher risk of catching a disesase. You should give them fresh fruit or vegetables instead of the ones that come in a bag. If that's not it, don't get anymore hamsters from those shops!

You're third one had an upper respitory infection. If not treated early, it kills them very quickly. 99% of the time, it's the pet store's fault. They buy them from filthy pet mills or back yard breeders for a few bucks. If you want another one, get one from a rescue. They will be able to answer your questions in person, too.

Do you give your hamster any fabric to chew? That's a common cause of slow, mystery rodent deaths. They swallow a bit, and slowly the fibres block their digestive system.
Paper's fine.
Of course, it might just be a crazy rumour that I heard.
