It is really hard to answer your question because you have not established the relationship between the child and yourself. It it just any kid then giving just any gift card is OK ($ 20- $ 50) Don't go crazy! If he is your child! I would urge you to invest in your child's passion, whatever it may be! Music, sports, movies, and you can do as little or as much as you want! You only know what your kid like! For example, if your child like making movies (you can get him or her, a book on video editing, some tapes, a software, etc....) Sport( jersey, enrollment in a winter or summer camp, fan gears, tickets to game) and the sky is the limit as children always amaze us with their passion.
If the child in question is part of your family but not your son or daughter, ask the parent if their something their are dying to get. 12 years old love to go out to movies, coffee, and hanging out with their friends. I would have loved to get passes to movies, popcorn and candy and a coffee card.
You can also get some magazine subscription after talking to the parents.
Remember that whatever you do, receiving a gift is awesome! You are a nice person for giving one!

Nerf guns (cheaper, no one gets really hurt), the game RISK (highly recommended by my 13-year-old son), CD in the genre thay like, perhaps with a CD player & headphones, hoodie sweatshirts, MAGIC "The Gathering" playing cards, Axe soap and/or giftsets of personal care products, Game Boy Advance, the book "Eragon" or Chronicles of Narnia DVD or book, also the book "Redwall", the first in a series or perhaps the book series "Left Behind:The Kids", maybe a BB gun with a paid voucher for gun safety training!

a gift that teaches financial skills are good. Look around on google, there are a couple different games that teach kids personal finance skills. They won't learn anything like that in school and you'll be giving him a great head start. The cashflow for Kids by the Rich Dad Poor Dad company is good and about $40. You won't get it in time for Christmas, but you should get something like this for him even though it will be a late present. He won't thank you for it now, but ten and twenty years from now he will thank you many times over.

Sounds like he knows what he wants, so give 'im something he may not realize he needs. Does he have protection for the bike & skateboard? A wireless bluetooth speaker for the iPod would work, too, or a reg-lar speaker/alarm clock spec for the iPod. Gl!

a $200, 30 year Treasury Bond security - they can watch it grow for quite a while, and it will teach them about saving money.
