pros: cheaper housing than in many urban areas, a perception that it's safer and quieter or that the schools are better than in the city

cons: traffic congestion, increased water/air pollution, loss of wildlife habitat and farm lands, homogenous suburban (non) culture.

I wouldn't be so against the development but they don't ever seem to do it responsibly. They never improve the existing infastructure before they build 5000 new houses. So the roads can't handle the volume of traffic, they just put up more stoplights which increases travel times. They don't build new schools until the old ones are way overcrowded, and then they raise everyone's property taxes to pay for the new classrooms. They don't consider the water usage levels and then they have problems producing enough and have to place restrictions on everyone. All of the improvements come at the expense of the taxpayers who are already way over-taxed, and meanwhile the developers are walking away multi-millionaires.
