What is that you feel sucks about windows ME anyway?
Vista is an operating system designed for next-gen systems.
If you don't have a 64-bit processor + 2gb or RAM + PCI express video, then don't bother.
XP is most likely the right operating for your system.
However, if you do have a machine like described above then Vista will allow to take full advantage of it.
Installing Vista on a 2ghz ssytem w/ 512 RAM is the equivalent of installing XP on a 486 DX.
You could probably get it to work but have nothing but problems and curse Microsoft as if it is their fault.
I will tell you this - Vista looks beautiful.
Peoples concept of what an operating system can do for them consistently baffles me.

I was a tester in the Windows group for 6 yrs I've seen all the betas and released versions from ME (I'm sorry) to Vista. I am typing this now on the final bits for Vista Ultimate. My personal machines will remain on XP-SP2 for some time yet. My work machines, I have no choice.

My experience has been that you leave alone any Microsoft product until it has been out about 6 months. They have had the beta version(s) out for a while, and the early releases were VERY buggy.
When it was still called Longhorn, there were a number of rewrites and features they dropped. So, I am going to wait for awhile and see if this one is going to get the support and continued development to succeed.
