Ok ...this is an answer you may not like...but Nels Cline is by far the best player on the planet. He plays so many different styles and yet has his own sound. He has also taken the instrument to another level with the use of effects and sampling. He took what Jimi Hendrix and Wayne Kramer(who is still alive) did with sound experimentation to another level. plus, he plays one of the most beautiful clean/acoustic guitars I've ever heard...mind blowing.

Check out his live work on "ashes of American flags" on the Wilco album kicking television...pure genius.

I would be mad at myself if i didn't mention Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, of sonic youth...those cats have been blowing me away for 25+ years now!

any hack can play the blues scales really fast...it takes a true artist to make the instrument his/her own.

I would have to go with Eric Johnson. He plays awesomely, and many different styles. Also, Al DiMeola, cause he has the right hand technique down.
Slash? don't make me laugh, anyone can play better than he does.
