my sister is worried about the waves my wireless router is sending off. she worries that they are harmful. she thinks that once the waves are sent off, they stay in the room, and are thus even harmful, even when you're not there, cause once you return, the waves are still there (similar to smoke that sticks to the carpet and sofas ...) is that true?

She has nothing to worry about. Radio & TV would have wiped out the human race if exposure to electromagnetic emissions were harmful.

Smoke is particulate matter -- it's a solid. Radio waves are just that -- waves of energy that move at the speed of light. We're saturated with them from radio, TV, cell phones, cordless phones, police radio, microwave ovens, police and aviation radars and dozens of other sources and have been for over 100 years.

Extremely high concentrations of radio waves at high power levels can be harmful. As in sticking your head in a microwave oven. The low power of consumer electronics pose no risk. A wireless router is nothing more than a highly specialized walkie-talkie as far as the radio waves are concerned.

The waves from your wifi router will get absorbed by the carpet, walls, etc. And even if they didn't they are a fraction of the power of all the various TV, Radio, and cell phone RF signals your body is bombarded with every second of every day.

If she's worried about that, then she needs to live in a lead-lined bubble and never use a radio, cell phone, or microwave oven.

The wireless router or access point sends signals called beacons advertising itself to wireless devices which receive them. The wireless device on the laptop or computer transmits data back to the access point .

I don't think they are harmful but if she's that worried about it she can unplug the access point and disable all wireless cards on any computer that has a one when not in use. I would doubt that it's anywhere nearly as harmful as talking on a cell phone without a earpiece.
