when i burn a magnesium strip what gas does it combine with?? oxygen?

Oxygen. Magnesium will burn in CO2, though it's still combining with the oxygen

Burning is definitely not a reversible reaction, for example if you burn a piece of paper, you know that you won't get the paper back as it was before. The same knowledge should be applied to chemistry.

Yeah, it gets oxidized by the oxygen. When you light it you are providing enough energy to get the reaction going. Then it is just a very exothermic oxidation reaction (as most are). You end up with fire, heat and MgO2

When you burn magnesium you get 2Mg + O2 = 2MgO plus lots of heat and light.

It won't be nitrogen, so if you are burning in air, yes.
