probably the same reason three buses show up at once when you've been waiting an hour, all things being random.

Jerry Seinfeld said that every wash, one sock decides to break free from its boring sock drawer prison, and it sees the laundry as a way of busting out. He didn't know where they go, though.

Personally, I think there's more of a "Sock Gnomes" conspiracy. Like the Underpants Gnomes (shown in an expose' on South Park stealing Tweek's underpants) stealing underpants for no good reason. Except lone socks are even more useless.

Unless the Sock Gnomes plan on offering socks back for a hefty ransom. They might get a few nickels for the safe return of stray sock-napping victims.

The missing sock sticks to the side of the washing machine or dryer near the top, so you don't see it, so you leave it in the laundry mat for the next person to keep. Either that, or you drop the sock somewhere between your bedroom, the laundry hamper, and the laundry room.

it is clearly obvious that your socks do not like you. I have conversed with my dryer and she confirms that they do not eat socks. IT is actually the process of transfer, as in transportation, that loses socks, oh, and not using a lint sheet, that's part of the problem too.
