This is a question I got asked at my last interview, I wasn't sure that I had given enough information in my answer. For those who gave me an answer to the question, thank-you! For those who didn't, don't be so suspicous!

1. Check to see if there were any error messages on the 5 machines. Look for a common denominator. See if the machines can ping each other or are completely isolated.

2. Check to see what switch(es) they were plugged in to. If 5 go down at the same time a failed switch or a switch that has lost its daisy-chain connection is very likely. Inspect the switch(es) for obvious causes -- no power, etc.

At this point I'll have isolated the cause and can make the necessary repairs to get them back on line.

^ I seriously doubt that all 5 guys cables just went bad at the same time, that wont solve anything. You can maybe check the WAN cable from the router to the switch/hub.

Check the hub/switch they are connected to or if you have 2 subnets check the subnet of the 5 that are not connecting right.. Need a little more detailed info.. What kind of network? what kind of hardware? OS and NOS if applicable? etc etc..

The first thing to recognise is that this is a homework or test-paper question... and how much will you learn by having it answered for you?

But, if you must... Check your network planning documents, and see what's common to the 5 dropped connections. Then replace it

Are they all on the same switch? Start with the simple things first, check all the connections. It sounds like a switch has failed/lost connection.

Swap their cable with a known working cable. Then swap their ports on the switch with a known working one.
