Since there really is no governing body controlling the internet, it really is impossible to censor. The supreme court ruled that if the internet were to be censored, it would violate the 1st amendment.
Besides, isn't it more of the parents responsibility to know what their children are viewing on the internet and to keep them from viewing things that arn't appropriate?

No, the Supreme Court has ruled again and again that most censorship laws on the Internet are unconstitutional violations of the First Amendment -- from the Communications Decency Act to the Child Online Protection Act on and on.
What is required is stronger parental involvement and/or LOCALIZED filtering software (buy NetNanny if you're afraid your kids will watch porn. Don't censor the whole Internet.)
There was an idea floated a while ago back to start a ".xxx" domain, and adult (sex) content would have to register there. Then, all you'd have to do is have one option on your browser "disable '.xxx' cites" and you're done. Anyone misusing a non-.xxx domain could have had their domain stripped or been subject to criminal penalties. It was a sort of "cyber zoning" provision that _probably_ would have withstood First Amendment scrutiny. Unfortunately, the plan was scrapped.)

Being that governments and laws are reactive, and thus behind current events, I don't see how the Internet can ever be fully censored. There is also the bent of the liberal minded and academia to always hide behind the first amendment to push their trash on the children so that it will become the norm when they grow up to adulthood.
What is needed the most is for parents to do as their name implies and parent children so they are not so easily desensitized and corrupted.

Sure it should be censored. Besides, why are we not a Sharia state? Hello people, what is wrong with you? Lets censor stuff that offends people, force women to wear those "The Abaya in the Gulf", and support honor killings. Every free thinking person in this world is allowed to have their opinion, and every opinion can be different. Anti immigrant - Pro drug smuggling (not really, but still) Anti Islam - Pro women and personal rights Anti Government (Pro Socialism) - Pro capitalism Or the asker of this question could get a clue and realize that there is hate in this world, and as long as we are not being car bombed or having people get their hands and feet sawed off, he or she could get over it and focus on bettering him or herself. In my honest opinion, the only sites that I would block would be sites that exploit children. And if you want to complain about the world hating on other cultures, go live amongst that culture, and when you want to pull out every single hair on your head, then maybe you'll find your clue. Or just go to that culture with a machine gun and tell them that treating their spouses like scum is not what Allah would want. Throwing their book back in their face can be fun. Oh, and hey buddy, I know you are way more holy than I, but I have yet to have a child in a 'white' nation offer my 'feeky feeky', porn, or offer me a BJ. I haven't read anything as hateful in the past god knows when as that which you have in your profile. You and I, buddy, could have a really good sit down chat about your 'ideas'. You wouldn't been the first twisted person I've had to set straight. And I'm not talking about violence; I'm talking about the anti-Qua'ran, intelligence.

It is up to you as a parent to monitor what your child is viewing, not the government. There is plenty of technology, that is easy to use, to filter Internet content. If you don't want to deal with filtering, then don't get Internet service. Since you pay for the Internet to come into your home you always have the option not to get it. (Unlike broadcast TV or Radio).
To me, censoring the Internet is like banning books from libraries. What is obscene to you, may not be obscene to me.

To be honest I do not agree.
It is about time that the world realizes that you just can't censor or 'dumb down' everything because a child might see it.
All adults need to let children know that there are things that are not intended for them and that they should leave them alone.
The computer is a tool, you should not let a child play with it unsupervised anymore than you would let a child play with a chain saw unsupervised.

No I don't agree. In fact I completely disagree with even the thought that the government knows what is best for my kids. I protect my kids just fine on my own. I don't need anyone to tell me what my kids can or can't do. Like another poster said... what you may consider obscene may not be to me.

It is impossible for one country to outlaw porn on the internet.
Servers exist around the world---so the stuff a kid in Chicago sees could be coming from Chile, or Belgium or Indonesia or....Chicago.
One way to limit underage access would be to create a domain (.porn) and require all pornographers to use that domain. Don't use the domain? Lose your site.
Web browsers for kids could be set so that they will not go to .porn addresses. This way a kid who likes the x men who adds .com and types it in for an address does not get a nasty shock.
Like it or not, adults have a right to view porn. The best way to protect kids is to make it harder to find or access.

You protect your kids. Know what they are doing, and install filters if needed.
Let those, who are of legal age, that want to see the sex and violence see it.
