I have a neighbor who has two huge, gorgeous german sheppard dogs, and a third one who is there alot that belongs to his gf...They are beautiful, intelligent dogs, which is more then i can say for the owner, he has had these dogs for a couple years maybe 3 and weve had no REAL problems but lately they have been coming over and killing my rabbits..they have killed 7 so far and tore up a couple pens, I have checked with law enforcement and i do have the legal right to shoot the dogs but i do NOT want to do this its not the dogs fault its going on as the owner is putting them in danger, i have called him SEVERAL times and asked him to contain his dogs only at night... i never asked him to pen them up all the time they dont bother anything of a day and i dont care if they are around then. The sheriff has spoken with him and he has paid for one of the rabbits ( my purebred brittish giant female) I have tried and tried to get him to keep them home at night to no avail...

we dont really have animal control here. we are out inthe country, i would love to get the dogs adopted out to somebody else. They would make the right owner great dogs, they just have a crappy owner now. i bet i have called him 50 times over this over the past 6 months, he says "ill see what i can do" and never does anything, i called him at midnight the other night and told him to get his dogs off my rabbits... i wated out the window and he never called the dogs. When i saw one of them jump up on the side of the cage i couldnt wait any longer and yelled at them to go home.Where if he had done it and punished the dogs and maybe TRIED to teach them better it could have worked, but he wont even make an effort.I am at a loss as to what to do. and im in west virginia animal law here is shoot anything killing your animals... but i dont want to do that. (id rather shoot the owner lol ) im kidding of course i wouldnt do that >:)

Im going to keep adding until i have a book here (sorry) I have contacted the sheriff and he has spoken with the neighbor. as i mentioned before we dont have much along the lines of animal control out here. This neighbor even had the nerve to ask all the neighbors not to put out chicken bonesand certain other garbage because he doesnt want his dogs to have them (none of us listened of course thats ridiculous) one of his dogs last fall got into antifreeze and died, no one knows who did it or if it was intentional or just someone had changed theirs for the winter season and left the bucket out....but it amounts to the same thing..a horrible senseless death for the dog.

In response to johns answer.of course ive got guns..more then one-im in wv after all.....and as for the rabbits being put in a safer place, they are in MY yard in enclosed pens up off the ground. I have more then fulfilled my end of keeping them safe...you try building pens for rabbits that two100 + pound dogs cant get into....not to mention the law states that even if they are running loose i have legal right to shoot the dogs for killing them as they are on my own property...which is exactly what im trying to avoid..but at the same time im not paying a lawyer 125 dollars or more an hour to take care of it either.

You have no choice but to be a little more aggressive with him. I mean as long as you don't do anything more than you already have, why should he? At least that seems to be his attitude.

Where I live there are leash laws. If something like that happened here we could call the humane shelter and they'd write him a warning letter. If he didn't heed that letter, he'd be turned over to the Prosecutor for legal action. All this would be done without him knowing that you even did anything. You might check and see what the humane shelter will do for you. Otherwise, hire an atty. to write him a letter.

I would be contacting animal control. Not only are the causing a danger to you and your ani, als, they are @ danger as well. I grew up down a country road, one where you would think it would be safe, but local teenagers sped through the road like it was a race track, not to mention trains and other wild animals. We also had a neighbor who was a little gun happy and would shoot anything he thought might be thinking of comming on his property. So though you may not be the one to shoot them, there are probably some that will. So you see, contacting animal control would be watching fo the dogs safety as well as your rabits. Or you could sue him @ small claims court for the remainder of the rabbits.Even if you don't want monetary compensation, have the reward or whatever be that he must keep his dogs confined. Maybe if the courts say something he will do something about it.

Have you tried going to your town counsil? They might be able to help you resolve this. But once a dog gets the taste of the blood they are going to keep coming back. Do you have a gun. Next time they come over shoot up in the air. Maybe that will get the guys attention. And tell him next time it will be the dogs! Good luck. I would put the rabbits somewhere safer.

You could take the dogs somewhere else. After awhile the guy will think "I'll do anything, just give me the dogs back". See if that works, if not then animal control would take them. If you do have to have someone take them away I'm sure someone will adopt them. You have to do something so that all animals are safe in the end. Do what it takes since the owner is pathetic.

Just don't shoot the dogs!! haha, it certainly isn't their fault.

If all else fails if you have a shotgun or know someone who has a shotgun, find someone who reloads their own shotgun shells and get him or her to load a few with rock salt for you. Then when the dogs come over pepper their butts with rock salt. A couple of times is all it takes, they'll get the hint.
