The spinal cord is surrounded by a thin membrane called the pia mater. This in turn is surrounded by cerebral spinal fluid and finally encased by a thick membrane called the dura mater. The entire structure passes through the spinal canal which is formed by bone (the vertebrae) and ligamentous tissue.
