Being from part of the world where we seam to breed serial killers this is a real topic of conversation.
There has to be something about our area that breeds anti social behavior to form these killers. There are those killers who feel they are possessed by some demon, I am sure you read about these.
Then there are those who feel to achieve true power one must take the life of another. Life does not mean to much to these people. Death is a part of life and some of these killers feel they are chosen to hurry this process up.
I am sure with three years of reading and studding these killers you know much more then I do!! I just live in a area where many of these killers seam to be coming from. The guy next door type of thing.
I am sure the Pacific Northwest is not the only place these killers are coming from but we seam to have a offal lot of them doing there business here. There is the Russian (I think it was) who had business in America and they finally caught him, but this I had herd is rare. I feel not rare at all. Other countries just keep this sort of thing hush, hush.
Our area is big, remote, some areas are. I feel there are many more out there, many more copy cats who want the attention. Many more women and minorities then they have caught thus far. It is a fascination for some to study these people. I feel someone who wants to study these people first needs to study the human mind and profiling. Movies as seen on TV our not the best place for true and accurate events. The books out there have to be scrutinized, books are put onto the market to make money. Most of these cases are in the court of law. These files are free to read and study. If one is truly studding this topic I would think the court paperwork would be the place for the real story.
I have not herd of this Dexter TV show....get the real facts as I had said...A great deal of money is made from this topic, therefor I feel the truth is berried within the dollar sign.
My thoughts about this...

Serial killers are people. And people do things for a variety of different reasons. So I don't think you're ever going to get a single 'serial killer profile' into which they all neatly fit. With one exception: serial killers all have to have at least some minimal cleverness, or they never will get to the 'serial' part - they'll just get caught.
Main motivations that are cited include social cleansing (they believe they're getting rid of undesirables), pay (contractual, social, or maybe they just go through their victims' pockets), sexually motivated (victims are all of one gender and are often abused), for personal pleasure (sadists, hunters, and the like), delusions (they believe they HAVE to, or are instructed by some imaginary source), and power (a form of domination or dealing with feelings of helplessness). But not only might these motivations all appy to a variety of activities, the list of them just goes on an on.
Having said that, I think serial killing is like forgery in a way. Though they don't like to admit it, the government knows that there are some forgers out there who commit their crimes so well that they are simply never caught. The false notes can circulate for years, if not indefintely.
I find it interesting that part of the FBI 'definition' of a serial killer includes killing in a systematic or patterned way. In a sense, this is almost a statement of the obvious. If there was no pattern, then they'd never be connected together or with the killer. Yet I suspect that there could easily be serial killers clever enough to CHANGE their patterns, and thus elude discovery, perhaps indefinitely as the forgers do. The FBI estimates that at any given time there are about 45 active serial killers somewhere in America.
Just like the FBI description, I also wonder at the commonly-thrown about appelation that serial killers are 'psychopathic' or 'abnormal'. Since we are not all serial killers, this also almost goes without saying - the psyche of a serial killer must be constructed a little differently from most of us.
Nor do I hold they they must necessarily be severely damaged mentally or come from ruined childhoods. Consider how many respectable citizens are charged with the job of killing people regularly. Many soldiers have more kills to their credit that most serial killers. Some policemen do. Even some bungling professionals have repeatedly cost people their lives. Therefore the gulf that divides a serial killer who finds his or her acts normal or even desirable from an average citizen is probably not so wide as most would like to believe...

Because they are mentally ill. Perhaps not criminally insane under the law, but certainly mentally ill. Sometimes we call this illness 'evil'. Sometimes it is something with which they are born. Often it is created by abuse during childhood. I'm not excusing them - in fact, I am a proponent of mandatory death penalty for serial killers. Because, even though it's a mental illness, it's just not something from which one can get better. I remember when Jeffry Dalhmer was arrested, they were saying that some things about what he had done were being exaggerated by his lawyer because he (she? they? Don't remember.) wanted to go for an insanity defense. Like, maybe he didn't really eat anybody. And I thought, "Who cares!?" Of course he's crazy - he proved that the first time he cut up somebody and put them in his freezer! The question should be, "Can he get better? Do you want him to come out of prison and live next door to you?" Didn't think so!
I also think that the media and public obsession with killers isn't helping things. Watching Law and Order five times a week isn't going to turn someone like me into a serial killer. (At least, it hasn't so far.) But it does give ideas to people on the edge. For example, the rising numbers of murder/suicide. (Although those people usually fit into the really p.issed off category, rather than the serial killer category. Cause once you kill yourself, well, then, you see the problem.

I think a lot of people want to know the same questions. That's why mental health people love to study them.
I think somewhere in their minds they have misconstrued their emotional beings. What everyone wants to know is, what triggered this.
IMO, their mental thought processes are wrong and no one knows whether it's caused by chemicals in their brains, lack thereof, environmental causes, or what?
I've read where killers feel no emotion, but if this were the case, why do they continue to kill? There has to be some kind of emotion being felt or they wouldn't continue to kill.
The horrible part is that there are many, many of them, out there!

I think that if you are trying to find the essence of why people kill, watching too many tv shows and movies is the worst thing that you could possibly do. The truth that lies within them is tainted and mutilated to titillate and entertain. If you want the truth, start with your basic psych classes and work your way up. It would take more than a three years to know all there is to know. The human mind is a many faceted thing.

I am wondering what is your fascination with serial killers. Why are people so interested in serial killers? Why, for example, was the film version of Silence of the Lambs, about a serial killer, so popular? Perhaps because they allow the viewer to indulge feelings of both attraction and repulsion. The Silence of the Lambs reflects our own normalness back to us. We can watch it and say 'My God, this man's crazy' and the implied message is 'Thank goodness I'm so normal.' I also am interested in knowing what makes the minds of serial killers tick. I'm fascinated by how the killer actually makes the jump from desire to actually doing it.

They have abnormal psychological conditions. Lots of times this was because of abuse and neglect as children. Some of them were just born that way.
Some serial killers like to gain power over victims to compensate for their own sense of weakness. Dominating others gives them the illusion of being strong. Some torture and kill others because they have become sadists after being tortured and abused.
Check out the site below for psychological analysis of serial killers.

I think abuse & religion has alot to do with the subject at hand -the reason I say religion is because alot and I mean alot of violence stems from religious abuse and hateful teachings as well-And finally I think alot of serial killers are demented and/or very very intelligent and kill to see if maybe they can get away with it and some have-anyway that's what I think

They are on a power trip. And once they realize how easy it is, they just can't (or don't want to) stop. It's the dopamine rush. Probably as good if not better than se*x
