What's the subway system like in Mexico City? Clean? Safe? Convenient?

Convenient, WAAAAY TOO CHEAP (the one-ride ticket costs $2.50 MXP, about 25 US cents), safe if you know how to move around, convenient, extremelly crowded on peak hours (Tokyo subway kinda crowded). Additional to subway system, you can find the metro-bus, which is a double-axis bus which connects with the subway stations. You can check out a map of Mexico City subway on:

It's definitely not the best... it works just fine, but many cities have more extensive subway networks, and Mexico City's isn't enough for all the users and for a city of 20 million. It is really cheap because it's subsidized by the government (about 20 US cents), but can get very very crowded, people don't usually let others leave the subway car before getting in the subway, and vice versa.

The subway system in Mexico City is clean & efficient, and cheap!. Buy tickets at the ticket window in each station. Fare is about 2 pesos per ride. Can buy single tickets or multiple tickets. It is well lit and there is security. However, at peak hours it can be too cramped, so avoid it then if you can. We have not personally had a problem with pick-pockets, but to be safe, keep valuables in hard to get to places. (Or in your hotel safe.) Maps of the system lines are available at the tourist kiosks around Mexico City, and there are subway "Metro" maps in the telephone books, and online. Have fun. They are better than the taxis.

It is convenient, it may be very crowded at rush hour, it is very cheap and quite filthy in some stations. As in all subway systems around the world, there are pickpockets but it is safe in general.

Hello, the subway, or metro as we called here in Mexico City, is very cheap, convenient, very safe and clean.
Even more clean than some subways in the USA.
