I haven't heard of a dry bran mash either....you could just put all the ingredients in a bag and put directions on the front and then pass them out. I think these cookies might be better though. My trainer gave me this recipe.
Horse Cookies: 1 cup uncooked oatmeal,1 cup flour,1 cup shredded carrots,1 teaspoon salt,1 tablespoon sugar, 2 tablespoons corn oil ,¼ cup water ,¼ cup molasses
Mix ingredients in a bowl in the order listed. Make small balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. My horses love these!

I make my own horse treats sometimes when I'm bored. I combine, oats, a little bit of barley (too much is unhealthy) sliced carrot, banana, and apple, applesauce and molasses. How much of everything you use depends on how many treats you want or how thick you want them. Then I make little balls and put them on a cookie sheet and cook at 375 degrees for about half an hour. They can stay at room temperature for a few days, though I would refrigerate them if possible. Don't worry about them rotting on the car ride. Another fun treat is to take a carrot and dip it in molasses and then roll it in oats. You have to freeze it after so it's a horse Popsicle.

This is the treat recipe, my mum thought it up, and beware, once you give these treats, your horses may well refuse everything else!
In a large bowl mix bran, rolled oats, flour, studmix(any grain mix will do) and molasses. A little hot water dilutes the molasses. Just keep adding everything until you have a nice sticky mixture. Then roll into small balls (you will make a huge mess) put on an oven tray, bake on a low heat for a short time until the treats are just crisp. Make sure you use plenty of molasses.
I have just passed on our SECRET treat mixture, no horse has ever been able to resist them! Beware! They becme addicts for these things!

We used to make this and sell it at the tack store I worked at...
"A Horse's Christmas Breakfast".
All the dry ingredients in a pail (ice cream buckets with lids worked great but we also used bags as well).
We put in the bran, and dried molasses (called econolass - it was available at feed stores but not sure if it still is) and then topped it all with a wooden spoon (very cheap at the dollar store) tied up in a red ribbon to the pail's handle or taped to the bag. If you cannot get the dried molasses, grab some little plastic containers with lids (from the same dollar store where you will find the spoons) and fill with molasses. Tuck that in the bran. All the people had to do was add the hot water when they were ready. This gave the owners the option as to when they wanted to feed the mash to their horses.

I have never heard of bran mash being made as a dry batch before. There are wafer treats available at feed stores that horses like. You might try some of these. My horses go nuts over the bite size nuggets that come in apple, peppermint, and licorice flavors. It also comes in butterscotch, though I have never tried this flavor with them.
