There are about as many as there are religions.
Classic
Alternative
"Alternative"
Punk
"Punk"
Post-Punk
Straight-Edge
Indie <-- the best :D
Pop
Metal
Hard
Soft
Screamo <-- basically crap
Emo <-- also complete crap
Electronica
Techno
Experimental
Psychedelic
Goth
Folk
Art
Garage
Grunge
Speed
Christian
New Age/Contemporary
..and the list goes on

Genres in " " are imitations of the real genre. Examples of "punk" rock would include Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, and SUM 41. They aren't worth listening to because they are fake and lack talent.

almost infinitely many. What you or I classify as punk or metal or whatever has many more definitions and classifications down the line. I'd call some band punk, but in reality they'd be post-hardcore straight-edge.... kind of ridiculous
