My parrot fish was totally yellow when I was given him, but now his mouth is turning dark or getting dark stains on it.
Is it from the wood I use to decorate my aquarium (he nibbles it) or is it something else?
In all other aspects he is very healthy.

it is a sign that he is a male parrot fish , males will get dark splotches over their body mostly on the tail and the front of the head.

i don't know about the wood causing it, but it is possible for the colors of a fish to change slightly as they age. sometimes impurities show up in a solid colored fish. i've seen darkening or black patches developing around the mouth in tetras, bettas and barbs. (my black-skirt has a black fu manchu now on his silver face) i don't keep parrot fish though. if it just looks like a color change i wouldn't be to worried. just be concerned if it looks like a wound, abnormal growth, parasites, fungus, etc.

best to ring a good petshop that stocks fish. they'll give u more info and possible treatment if any is needed. A parrot fish can be pretty pricey depending on size!

i keep parrot fish, no one has mentioned yet that most parrot fish are dyed with Bright colours, so after a couple of months your parrot fish will begin to lose its colour's, and you will begin to see its true colours .
