Hauptmann was probably not bright enough to have done it. He was a scapegoat for whoever did do it. It was easy to convict him, clear up a high profile case quickly and look good. There was more to it than ever came out.

Was Lindbergh involved? Probably not but he left himself open to question by not acting as you would expect a father to act when his baby disappeared. Instead of helping he went out of his way to hinder. Why will never be known. But he did have a very high opinion of himself and his position. He would not have wanted anyone investigating him. Especially when it became a murder remembering that family are most often the killers in a murder.

The Lindbergh kidnapping was the abduction and murder of Charles Lindbergh III, the toddler son of world famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, Jr. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, in 1932.
The kidnapping and subsequent trial might be described as a media circus: every development was followed by millions of people; newspaper writer H.L. Mencken called the affair "the biggest story since the Resurrection."
Bruno Hauptmann was convicted and executed for the crime, though he proclaimed his innocence. In the subsequent decades, many have argued that Hauptmann was innocent: the victim of a miscarriage of justice by authorities eager to resolve a highly public case. He undoubtedly possessed some of the ransom money, but beyond that, the questions of further involvement in the crime may remain open..☺
