I want to connect my computer directly to my modem. However, right now I am connected via a router (NETGEAR WPN824). I was wondering if detaching my router would make me have to config my router all over again?

no that wont reset it....you will need to unplug the modem (from the POWER source) for 10 seconds then plug up your pc to the modem then plug the power back up to the modem....the modem remembers the device that it is pluged into so everytime you switch from a router to modem, laptop to modem,or desktop to modem, you have to reset the modem so it will see the new device

No. If you're going to connect your computer directly to the modem you should reboot the modem and the PC once they're connected. Your PC will get a new IP address. This will be a public IP so your machine will be directly connected to the Internet. Make sure your firewall is enabled before you do that!

Your router's configuration will not be affected. Just disconnect it and turn it off if you're going to hook the PC directly to the modem.

No, powercycling does help alot of problems with releasing an ip address and actually configuring it to use the routers software. But to clear back to default there is probably a reset switch on the router some where, or the private address you can access via HTML might have a option to reset back to default.. And I just realized you asked if your settings get messed up.. Answer is no :)

No, the router will "remember" it's settings. However, when you plug your computer into the modem, the computer must now tell the modem how to connect to your ISP. You should have the instructions/software that your ISP gave you for doing that.

No your router will retain its settings excluding its wan ip address if it is dynamic especially if it is at the end of the ip lease. When you reconnect the modem to the router it should contact the dhcp and obtain an address.

No.
Most routers save the information until you hit the reset button the reset button is usually in the back of the router and you would have to use a pen tip to reset it

No this just turns it off and on. The only way to restart is there is one of those little buttons on every moden that you have to push with something sharp liek an edge of a pen. That is the restart button teh restarts everthing on yoru modem/.

No, it wont. if you connect the cable from your modem straight into your pc, bypassing the router it should work just fine, no further settings are necessary.

People tend to take their home wifi for granted, like their electricity supply: it’s just supposed to be on. But unlike your power, if your wifi stops working, too often it’s up to YOU to diagnose and fix it. I work at home and depend on broadband internet to make my living. This week I lost about two full working days because my broadband went out. My internet service provider (ISP), Comcast, was unable to get it working or even steer me in a useful direction, despite keeping me on the phone for hours and running lots of tests of the connection between their equipment and my equipment.
