He is a product of the culture he came from. He tried so hard to hide his feelings and could not, but was told he was not allowed to express them.
It's the beach ball theory. You can hold a beach ball under water, but only very shallowly and for a short amount of time. Even then, it is hard to control. But the deeper you press it under and the harder you try, the more likely it is to pop up and off into a totally inappropriate direction. Much like the repression of sexuality.
I think he's to be pitied. And I feel bad for the pain his religion (yes. his religion was the one that told him he HAD to be straight) put his wife and kids through.

hypocrite, like so many of the Bible-thumpers that point their fingers at us and dare to call US sinners! the louder they scream and the more they point their fingers, they more of a liar and hypocrite they usually are. he deserves whatever he gets....
