The first of any series has the element of surprise/new concept, etc.; all subsequent installments can do is attempt to out-surprise the first....in my opinion anyway.

Usually a matter of opinion!
Gone in 60 secconds (Nick cage, Angelina Jolie) is a remake of the 1974 HB Halicki's gone in 60 secconds.
The new one is very entertaining and pretty action packed. The original is a great movie also but it is simply not as entertaining as the Nick Cage version.
There is way more money nowdays for movie budgets, and much better technology. However, computer graphics sometimes cannot compare to the theatrics of older movies where talent and inginuity played a big part. Think about "bullet time" that was first used in "the Matrix".
It really all comes down to a matter of opinion!

Toy Story 2 was better than the first.
2 Fast 2 Furious had better car chases than the first (which is basically what those films are about)
The Empire Strikes Back was better than Star Wars.

It's rare, but it's been done. Godfather Two was better than the first and Shrek 2 was awesome, maybe better than the original. It rarely happens though. Can anyone say Bridget Jones 2...Oceans 12...Legally Blonde 2?? Some movies shouldn't be duplicated.
I especially love when they make sequels to movies that were shitty to begin with.

The Return of the Pink Panther was much better than the original. Empire Strikes Back was marginally better than Star Wars.

The first example that comes to my mind is that I think "Aliens" is slightly better than the also excellent "Alien" (they take a nosedive immmediately thereafter).
"Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan" is far better that "Star Trek - The Motion Picture".

Godfather II was better than the first, but the original was still a great movie..........Aliens was better than the first, more creatures killing armed marines!!

I can be done, but it is VERY hard (Godfather II and Lord of the Rings come to mind as successes)

TERMINATOR TWO was way better than the first.
