Hello,
The SAT is a major factor, I would just try to aim as high as I can with my score. It also depends on which college you want to attend. The liberal arts college has lower standards, but McCombs school of Business has higher standards which requires a much higher academic standing. Not only do they look at your SAT but also the essay. I think the essay is the most important when getting into UT-Austin. It is very very competitive. Write a great essay, and try to keep a GPA of 4+. I had a GPA of 4.4 but still didnt manage to get in, so extracurricular activities also play a major factor. Talk about all the groups, clubs, activities you have participated in your essay. Good luck. Oh, and if your in the top ten percent they should legally be able to let you in, but not necessarily into the college of your choice. Good Luck. GO OU!!!

Yes. UT is an incredibly hard school to get in and STAY in. If you're not serious your first year, you will be booted. Out of my friends that applied, only the ones above 1300 combined made it. If you have good grades and are well-rounded, you will probably do well on the SAT anyways, so don't worry. Good luck!

--And just because it is in Texas as someone noted, does not mean their education standards will be lower than any other state. Check out what they are doing at A&M and remember the human genome was decoded at Texas Tech.

You can search this online in about 2 seconds. UT Austin is pretty competitive for a SouthWestern school. They turn down about half the applicants. About 20% of kids have SATs over 700, which puts the school in pretty good company - it's not the Ivy League or Duke or Stanford, but very respectable.

On the other hand, it's in Texas.....
