What would you need to set up lights, such as christmas lights, to play to music? What kind of software is involved? What kind of hookups are needed? And where can you get them? Thank you in advance.

No programming is required, an electronic circuit controls the lights without a computer

Radio Shack used to sell what was called a color organ. It was a sound activated set of lights that would respond to different frequencies using three channels (sets) of lights.

It used a microphone pickup and responded to room noise and music

You can build a simpler version which uses an SCR and is triggered by audio from a headphone jack. The attached link shows a schematic for a single channel.

This man did it and i looked it up on snopes (i was bored) and it gives you links to show how to do it.
