Believe nothing you see on TV.

If your knife is sharp enough and you do it fast (which chefs on TV definately do) you won't cry.
Some suggestions I found:

Put an unpeeled onion in the freezer and freeze it for 20 minutes before chopping/ slicing/ cutting it. You will not ‘cry’ because the sulfuric compounds contained in the onion do not react with the air as quickly when they are cold.
Cut a cone at the bottom of the onion, the root end, roughly about a third of the diameter of the onion and about 1/3 deep. Throw it away and chop the onion the usual way without crying.
Light two fragrant candles close to you when slicing onions. Not only do the candles smell great they also burn up the fumes that cause the tears.
Peel the onion, cut it in half and soak it in water for a few minutes before cutting it. The water dilutes the sulfuric compounds.

The easy way out is to use swimming goggles while chopping onions. Works like a charm though the sulfuric fumes fog up your vision from time to time.
Use a food processor to chop onions.

Don’t use a blunt knife to chop or cut onions. A sharp knife releases less sulfuric fumes as compared to a blunt knife.
Don’t keep your mouth open while chopping onions.

because they know how to cut them up properly leaving the root till last, plus they probably put them in water over night before, and they chop them fast. they are chefs so they know all the tricks of the trade on how not to cry over an onion on TV

Either 1) They aren't real onions, or 2) They aren't real chefs, they are robots and they do a voice over. I think 1 is more reasonable.

I was told by a Chef if you use a very sharp knife it does not happen
The acid is released when the blade presses on the onion

Because they know just like I know how to cut onions without getting runny eyes that hurt. What you do is, you don't cut off the root that's on the boottom. Because that's where all the fumes are. Or whatever you wanna call them. So try it next time, it works.

They use very sharp knives which prevents the juice from the onion from spraying into the eye.

Maybe they eat a piece of bread while they chop the onions. That's supposed to help.

I've been told the same as "A M" supposedly the fumes are attracted to the closest bit of liquid and in most cases, guess what, thats yours eyes, so doing what A M says, does actually work.

Its like most things you get immune to the onion Juice, girls in an onion factory just get used to it............ its like working in an environment with high smell such as a glue or paint after a while you just don't smell it ....
