I step to the left.
You are probably in a country where people drive on the left, so stepping to the left feels natural to most adults because that's what they're used to when driving. It's just a convention that has evolved so that people won't run into each other all the time.
Historically I think it developed because most people are right handed, so if you needed to defend yourself from the other person it was better to have your stronger hand on their side.

Sorry, I was always taught to step to the right. My mom says that's because it's the side of the road we drive on, so it's common to everyone.

You should go to the right, not the left. Its the right of way on our roads and it is used in civilian life as well.

if i'm just crossing paths with a person...i keep walking. and if they are in my way, i go to the right not the left.
