One can not just stop being depressed, this is a process.
I feel one is depressed due to not having something they are lacking.
In the Pacific Northwest of the USA where it is raining quit a lot, there is proved facts that people here are highly likely to get depressed at some point in there life, usually during the winter, or the rainy season. Which if you ever been here is almost the whole year!! Seattle being the rainy city for a reason...
I feel every home where it is rainy outside or snowy and dreary needs to install florescent lighting or some form of natural light. The vitamin in sunlight (D) needs to be somehow replaced in the body. Either through diet or the lights in the home.
Look at all the stories of the minors in Alaska killing themselves or others from being snowed in, months at a time. I think this is due to depression. A real condition.
Read some of Robert Service's writings (another famous Canadian by the way lol! No I am not Canadian). There was no such things as depression back in the Gold Rush times, but one can clearly see in his writings that depression was a real condition back in the day he writes about.... I put a link to his web site, I have books of his and a vinyl album that given the time to read you will see what I am talking about....
I also am not a big supporter of the drugs that are handed out like candy these days....

I was in your shoes not too long ago... I still am recovering but much better...
What I did...
1. Start praying or affirming positive thoughts i.e. mine was, The Lord is healing my heart and my family's hearts. The Lord is providing me strength and my family strength.
I repeated this with gratitude and feeling, it is amazing what faith and positive thought does, it will be difficult and uncomfortable at first, but keep it up, it will get easier.
2. I didn't want outside help but I finally relented to my family and saw a counselor once a week. It was really amazing how helpful it is. Be humble and wise enough to seek help. You will make much faster progress talking with a professional then with any friends, family and dealing with it yourself.
3. I started taking personal development courses. In this particular course there was individual work but a lot of interaction with the other participants. These two courses were some of the best experiences I have ever had! Pretty amazing, considering how depressed I was.
4. Be good to yourself and take it easy on yourself. There is no time limit to your healing, nothing to live up to, you are here and you have a right to be happen. Begin slowly and KEEP GOING! When things seems like they just keep getting worse and couldn't get any worse... JUST KEEP GOING! And keep looking for the light. In the end others can help you, but only to the degree you allow them and reach out. It is really up to you to find 'the light'. Keep moving in a positive direction no matter what!
Things will get better if you do this... I promise!
Peace, joy and love,
David

You just can't snap out of it. You need too ask yourself what triggered it, how long has it been going on for, is it genetic, and how bad do you feel. If it's interfering with you're daily life than you should make an appointment to see a psychologist. What ever you do don't wait if it's getting bad or if you're ashamed. Believe it or not a lot of people suffer from depression. I wish you the best of luck and happy holidays!

There are different types of depression. There is the type that is thought to be brought on by chemical imbalance, the type that is situational as well as the type brought on by past trauma. You first need to figure the cause. Try writing down your thoughts and taking a look afterwards to help you decide this.Make an appointment with a trained therapist as soon as possible and take your notes with you.If you can not afford one you may be able to see one at no cost or on a sliding fee scale based on income at your county mental health agency. Do talk to a therapist, friends and family mean well but do not have the training needed to help you truelly figure things out.Therapists don't solve our problems, but give us the tools we need to solve them ourselves. They don't really answer questions but rather ask them to help us see ourselves differently. We can then react and respond differently and I hate to use the word again but we then get a different outcome.I hope you get better very soon!!!!

find a good therapist or support group and get out of the house as much as possible. run, go for walks, go out to see a funny movie, whatever as long as you're not just sitting inside all day being depressed. some people find that drawing or painting or doing some form of art helps them as well.

You could seek help with a therapist or a support group. If you don't want to do that, I would suggest you get involved in some volunteer work to take you outside yourself. It'll make you realize that there are a lot of people with problems, but you're doing something for them that will make it easier. That alone can serve to cheer you more than you can imagine. Giving to others is truly a gift to yourself.

If you are talking about clinical depression, you really need to talk to someone, a professional.
I went through depression alone, I never spoke to anyone. I made it through but other people have not, they have died.
There are many people who understand what you are feeling and can help you.
If you are talking about just feeling a bit crappy, I agree that getting active can help you to feel better. Being around people helps too.

i was severly depressed, but im slowly getting better. the main thing that helped was trying new things as often as possible and not having the same routine. its hard at first, but you have to realize that you have to change and if you cant do it from the inside out, do it from the outside in. sorry i am so cheesey..

First, you need to figure out WHY you're depressed. Once you know, then change it. Talk to a therapist.
