I have owned 2 mazda 626's and 2 ford probes (mazda 626 parts). If you have the automatic then pray now... the automatic trannies in the 4 cylinder models were very unreliable. Check this website, www.mx6.com the mazda mx6 shares mechanical parts with the 626.

My parents used to have a 1993 Mazda 626. They got it with 73,000 miles on it and had until 77,000 before getting rid of it. The main reason was the tranny. When I drove the car itself it seemed fine, however the shifts between the gears were taking longer than usual. It also would not shift into drive in the cold mornings. We tried getting the tranny fixed but ended up selling it, not wanting to mess with it anymore.
Now, I don't know if that's exactly your problem but I thought I'd give you some insight on it.
