How about a tree? Sometimes your park, library, schools, etc., will accept the gift of a tree in someone's name and mark the tree with a plaque. You could also give a donation of blood to the Red Cross in memory of someone. Or, you can give a monetary donation to a charity in the name of your friend.
If these don't appeal to you, how about getting a stepping stone they can keep with a verse, their names, etc. on it...check with your florists.
