Don't have kids, but I do remember leaving cookies out. I remember one year leaving a slice of meat pie I helped my mom make with a note. Always had to leave an apple for EACH reindeer (inlcuding ruldoph). Or a carrot. Milk was a must or egg nog (no alcohol)
I do remember one year my dad hopped on the roof and banged around with sleigh bells yelling merry Christmas (found this out 5 years later). To find out he almost fell off doing that too (he and our old neighbours did the same thing one after the other so it sounded like santa was on the move!).

Cookies (special one decorated for Santa Claus), a Glass of Milk with chocolate syrup flavoring, some Carrots for the reindeers, and a special hand-made Christmas Ornament (which mysteriously shows up somewhere on the Christmas tree with a snowflake stamp on it after Santa moves it there!).

When we make Christmas cookies, we always make one very special cookie, decorated especially for Santa. Then we leave that one out for Santa on Christmas eve, along with a small glass of milk.

When my teenagers were younger... One year we put out left over chinese food...and a can of Diet Coke~ Loved that!! Told the kids...Santa probably didn't eat dinner yet!
With my younger 2 ( 5 and 2)~ we put out cookies, milk, carrots and sugar cubes for the reindeer and a Thank you note from them to Santa for thinking of them when they are good!! THey smile from ear to ear when we read it to them!

Of course chocolate chip cookies and milk - but usually chocolate covered peppermint sticks and a from-the-heart note or poem. Also, I usually leave a "thanks" note from Santa. My daughter loves that more than anything! And don't forget the reindeer - carrots are good and my daughter says Rudolf loves apples best! :-) Have fun with it....the memories last a lifetime unlike the junk under the tree.

I don't have any kids, but i used to leave out a carrot for ruldolph and a glass of sherry and mince pie for father christmas - under the christmas tree. And i used to leave a huge sack in my bedroom ready for him to fill with loads of goodies.
Waking up on xmas morning was great. My xmas sack would be overflowing and there would be loads of pressies under the tree. The carrot would have magically disappeared ;-) along with an empty glass of sherry and a few crumbs where father christamses mince pie was

Well I don't have kids YET. But when I was little my mom and dad would let me help them bake cookies and then have me write santa a note or they would help me with it and so we would leave him 3 cookies and a glass of milk and a letter.
