You should use the number of countries as a starting point. Here is a link to a list of the 193 countries in the world along with their capitals.

Please note, Taiwan and its capital Taipei were left off the list. If you count Taiwan, there are 194 countries.

http://geography.about.com/od/countryinformation/a/capitals.htm

Also be aware, some countries have more than one captial. For example, Bolivia.

Its administrative capital is La Paz.
But its judicial capital is Sucre.

Also note Nauru. It has no official capital but its government offices in Yaren District.

Also check South Africa and Cote d'Ivoire.

You'll have to check the list for exceptions to the one country, one capital rule.

HERE'S A VERY ACCURATE ANSWER....

According to the United Nations, there are 194 sovereign (independent) nations on earth.

But not every country has just one capital.
Bolivia, for instance, has 2 (La Paz and Sucre)
Holland, South Africa, and Cote D'Ivoir are iffy because they sometimes count one or sometimes 2 (in South Africa there's like 3 or 4)

So there are probably 195 (maybe a little more because of the debatable countries ) independent country capitals.

But total capital cities, there are thousands....
The are country capitals, province capitals, state capitals, and so on...

I hope this helps :)

assume 1 per country, then how many countries are ther? Difficult. the best estimate is somewhere around 190, but some self declared countries are not recognised internationally.

For example, is the UK 1 country, or 4 (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
