A friend of mine (honestly, it's not me!) cheated on her husband. She despised herself for it, swore it was a mistake, and vowed never to do anything like that again. Her husband, she felt, hadn't a clue that she'd been unfaithful; nevertheless my friend had this 'need' to tell him about it--to confess. He nearly left her, doesn't trust her anymore, but she says she feels better having gotten it off her chest. Perhaps she's just a glutton for punishment, but I doubt it. Where do you think this psychological 'need' to confess comes from, and how universal is it?

Be remorseful is good enough. Confession sometimes can cause more damages than one think. I guess its this biological thought that at least with it off my chest I can now move on with my life without any guilt feeling.

Its called a guilty conscience and it will eat a person alive from the inside and majority of people cant handle it so they feel the need to get it off their chest. People feel or think that if they tell all that it will make all better and the internal regrets will be gone forever. But the guilt and regrets never do leave, but their conscience made them tell regardless. Every human being has one but some are able to handle the guilt feelings better and hold it inside even though their conscience still eats them inside. Good luck and Merry Christmas

Some people feel really do suffer from a guilty conscience. It can be very agonizing for these folks to live with it. It's a cops best friend as they say. I don't know why they think it is better to confess though beyond just making themselves feel better. Seems to me they are just spreading the hurt around and making life harder on themselves.

One word sums it up...Guilt.
Guilt can constantly weigh on you, making you depressed, constantly looking over your shoulder, wondering if the other knows or will know. Plus, It seems she knows she was wrong and wanted her husband to know that he can trust her by her telling him about her mistake. Granted it will take time for his trust to rebuild, but it would have been even worse if he found out on his own, instead of from her.

Ever remember the Children on the play ground screaming "Tateltal,Tateltale" tell her this is what she is. I think in the back of everyones mind we at some point feel like we have to tell the truth because it will save our relationship but look at you friend for example can we get over the child like behaivor were we actually have to tell them. do you think that every one does wrong then "tells" NO! Tell her to get over it!

I don't know, but some of the greatest minds had pondered this question before... See Edgar Allan Poe's "The Imp of the Perverse"; great story.

She was very selfish to unburden herself at the expense of her husband's security. Now her husband won't feel safe or secure in their relationship, will always wonder what it was about him that caused her to stray, if he is inadequate, if he isn't rich enough or smart enough or handsome enought and he will always wonder if (more likely when) she will do it again. She hurt his feelings for her own selfish reasons.
She was rude and wrong and slutty to do what she did but she made it all the worse by "confessing" to her husband. Did he really need that information burned in his brain for the rest of his life?

It's called a conscience. At one time everyone had one. Now those with a conscience are hard to find. Very very very sad.

Wow does she have any sisters. I was unaware women even had a concience anymore. In the end, if they survive it will lead to a greater trust, once he realizes she could have kept it a secret.
