It is a form of parapraxis. The attention becomes fixated on a particular object while the unconscious activity takes control and does a familiar activity like driving a car. The routine of driving does not have to be conscious. Our senses are still active and sending the same messages but the normal attentive or consciousness is not there driving the car. It is on the phone or daydreaming or subjecting itself for some reason or other, it could be thoughts of what one is going to do later with the family or preoccupation at work or a problem of some sort like in road rage where one is stressed for some time even while on the highway doing 65. It is the same thing as when you get home and put the keys someplace but cant remember where. This is a bit stretched from the Freudian Slip but the elements seem to be the same. A seemingly simple activity, driving a car, and the habit of the activity itself simple, it is easy to drift off and daydream.
I notice that truck drivers (myself included) who have been on the road a long time can be going down the road weaving back and forth and Ive noticed that after some time they are still on the highway. Once in Las Vegas I noticed a truck weaving from the outside lane to the edge of the inner lane and then back to the edge of the outside lane, for about 20 miles. I pulled alongside, honking horns, calling on the radio all to no avail, the driver was out cold, her head up against the driver side window and totally oblivious conciously to the fact that 40 tons were part of her activity. I learned that the brain with the extensive sensory system still functions unconciously. If the vehicle, as in this case slows enough the system has plenty of time to respond and maintain the vital instinct for life by keeping the truck on the road. I finally got out of there because it is still not safe and there was nothing more I could do. She drove from Blue Diamond Road to Craig Road and not once woke up. Finally she pulled off at that point, as if on automatic pilot.

Some folks say we all have a bit of multiple personality in us. Say part of you wants to cook and part of you wants to eat out. This is 2 parts of you, right? So part of you can drive while the other thinks of other things and then it's like"how did I get here"? and you have no recollection.Blanking out, daydreaming these are associates to this theory.

I feel this is a form of tunnel vision. A real condition. Though not total tunnel vision. Someone who has had this understands what this is. But I do feel this is a form of it....of course I could be wrong too...
