It depends on the situation and circumstance! Yes, look out for yourself, but try to minimise the damage! Then you would be doing the best you could for all involved! Remember, you don't know their situation either.

So for someone to say you are selfish sounds to me like they are selfish and want YOU to do something for THEM!

You have to answer to yourself.
If you have a choice of actions and both are equal in terms of harming or benefiting others, then do what is best for you.
If you one harms another but benefits you, you have a difficult choice. Likewise if it harms you but benefits another.
Only you can truly know if you are falsely justifying your actions or truly are just in them.
