Because there isn't exactly 4 weeks or 28 days in every month, it ends up being about nine and a half months pregnant. I guess they say nine because it is over nine months to be pregnant, but not really ten months. It is kinda confusing, but I hope that helped you out some. I know with my first pregnancy I was all messed up with dates lol, but I got it now. At 28 weeks, you still have nearly 3 months left (12 weeks) even though you're 7 months lol!

I've never understood why people say they are such and such months pregnant. I always go by weeks because some might consider a month 4 weeks or a month 30 days or say Dec 25th - Jan 25th a month. All have a different amount of days in it. Some women are confused to. When you say you are 7 months pregnant: most likely that means you are 6 months but in your 7th month of pregnancy. That would make sense:
Dec: 6 months but in 7th month of pregnancy
Jan: 7 months but in 8th month of pregnancy
Feb: 8 months but in 9th month of pregnancy
March: 9 months but in 10th month of pregnancy
Take me for example. Yesterday I was 8 wks... If I went by a month being 4 wks I was 2 months yesterday and by my due date on July 31st I will be 10 months and 1 week. If I went by a month being from say Nov 24 - Dec 24 (the first date of my last period was oct 24th) I wont be 2 months until Christmas Eve and will be due when I am 9 months and one week. Its all in the way you look at it. People say 9 months because they are going by date not weeks.
Hope that makes sense to you and helps a little.

It depends on the way you look at it. 40 weeks can be 10 Lunar Months (28 days) or 9 Calender Months (which are generally about 31 days). I had an argument with one of my friends about this subject actually. I insisted it was 9, he insisted it was 10. We were both right in a way. So, hopefully this was helpful. :)

Technically your due date is at the end of your ninth month. But, MANY people go over thier due date so technically don't have their babies until into their 10th month. I'm not really sure why they don't just call it 10 months to begin with, but since most people don't find out they are pregnant until around 4 weeks, technically, you only know your pregnant for 9 months. So maybe that's why. I was wondering about that too.

Okay pregnancy is 40 weeks. You are pregnant for 10 months, but you don't count the month till it is over right? So at 40 weeks it has been ten months, but till then you are nine months and 1,2, or 3 weeks along.

First of all, there are 4.33 weeks per month (not 4), which is part of your confusion.
(You know there are 52 weeks in a year, but only 12 months.
So if you divide 52 weeks by 12 you get 4.33 weeks per month).
Second, doctors start counting your gestational age from BEFORE you get pregnant. They start the count from the date of your last period, which is about 14 days or more before women are even pregnant.
Third, 40 weeks = nine and half months (remember there are 4.33 weeks in every month). But if you subtract those two weeks before you were even pregnant, its actually only 9 months.
Are you with me?
LOL ;-)

I thought the same thing when I was pregnant...had to sit down and think about it...A lot of months do not have 4 weeks in them. So yes its forty weeks but not really 10 months

Yea,like the question above,it's practiced by most doctors not to count the first 2 weeks from conception as part of the pregnancy.
For example,if you concieved on the 1st December, your pregnancy isn't classed as it...exists basically, until the 14th Dec,which is then the date of the start of your pregnancy.

I had this same scary math problem. It's true, you are actually pregnant for 10 months.
Check out "The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy" by Vicki Iovine. Not only is it frank and funny, but she actually talks about this very miscalculation in the first chapter!
Good luck!

Well yes and no. Most months have more than 4 weeks in them so that is how they get the nine month thing. I think it is just the doctors being nice saying nine and not ten. That way we don't feel so crappy about being pregnant forever. Good luck
