Ruler Of Ancient Rome

The last known ruler of what was known as the classical roman empire was ROMULUS AUGUSTULUS. He reigned from 475 to 476 A.D. He was desposed by a collection of Gothic and allied tribes who were the Western Roman Empire's army of the day under ODIECCER. The reason why was because the imperial officials under him witheld because of corruption the army's pay. In the Roman Empire that was a big no no. Romulus Augustulus was relegated hence to a monastery. Also there was a puppet emperor in the province of Pannoemia(east austria-hungry) named Julius Nepos. Incidently he was the immidiate predecessor of Romulus Augustulus.
See the Roman Empire had been divided in 395 A.D. by Theodosius I between his two sons HONARIUS (who got the east) and ARCADIUS (who got the west). After 476 A.D. the Eastern Roman Empire continued. It's current ruler in 476 A.D. was ZENO. The Eastern Roman Empire evolved into the Byzantine Empire. It can be considered that this took place approximatley around the time of HERACLETUS around the mid 7th (600s) century A.D. The very last Emperor of the then Byzantine Empire was CONSTANTINE XI (Dragonis) who died at the siege of Constantinopal on Thursday the 29th of May 1453.
Seeing all was lost he through off his robe and imperial insignia and leapt sword in hand into the fray and was never seen again.
The Byzantines had always called themselves Romans. They regarded themselves as Romans. They regarded themselves as heirs to unified Empire. And they ended their empire like Romans. With the emperor at their head. It is also interesting to not that the last roman emperor of the west had the name of the first, AUGUSTUS. And that the last emperor of the east had the name of the first(the founder of Constantinopal) CONSTANTINE.
Hope this helps.

The Western Empire was constantly harassed by barbarian invasions, and the gradual decline of the Roman Empire continued over the centuries. Rome was eventually 'taken hostage' by barbarians, after they had been promised land. Their initial plan was to stop anything and anyone entering or leaving the city until they were given land to settle in. However, after several betrayals, they grew angry and took the city for their own. In 410, the city of Rome itself was sacked, and on September 4, 476, the Germanic chief Odoacer forced the last Roman emperor in the west, Romulus Augustus, to abdicate. Having lasted for approximately 1200 years, the rule of Rome in the West came to an end.
