Yes there are many problems with contact lenses and sometimes with the solutions for cleaning them, as well. I have given up on contact lenses and I am back to Glasses they now come frame less, and are much lighter. Also the laser surgery has progressed and come down in price, that is another option to consider. These seem better answers, and not as tedious as contact lenses. What I liked best about the contact lenses is to be able to change the color of my eyes with them, from green to blue or aqua. Happy Holydays

Storing Rigid gas permeable lenses (or hard lenses) in water may not be a great risk.
SOFT contact lenses in tap water is ABSOLUTELY DANGEROUS. You are playing with fire while taking bath with kerosene.
Soft lenses are like sponge. They suck-in everything that can disolve or can be carried with water e.g. Chlorine, Pathogens (disease causing organisms), toxins etc.
Acanthamoeba is only one of the scary thngs.
My advice to all who have posted already "PLEASE DO NOT SOAK SOFT LENSES IN WATER". If you do not have a lens case, throw away your lens. It is cheaper and more convenient than loosing vision PAINFULLY.

I've worn contacts for several years and I know better than to store them or even rinse them with ordinary or tap water.

If you are traveling and forgot the saline solution (and can't get any) how do you suggest people store their contacts?
Personally, I would leave them in my eyes for one night and not take them out. But I'm not sure how much harm that would do either.
Thoughts?

I doubt that doing that for one night is going to make anyone blind. They say that wearing contacts to bed can lead to eye infections, but I've done it and I don't have any infections. It's really a problem if you do it all the time.
