When astronauts used to come back to earth, before the plane-like lander they have now, why did the Americans land in the oceans, and the Russians land on solid ground?

A sea landing is usually safer and softer for the astronauts and there's no risk of landing on someones house. PLus we were open about it. The Russians had desserts to land in and if something went wrong they'd be the only ones to know about it.

Russia had large unpopulated areas to land in. We did it as a less expensive alternative. Besides the Russians wanted full control.

the Russians never made it to the moon either. So what does that tell you?
Although ocean splashdowns are not without their risks. Ask Gus Grissom--well--before he died (see the Right Stuff).
