alright first off, michael s., you're on a massive member server at your school, hence they are slow and a password is so that no one can tamper with anyone else's files...so shut up...second off, Mac's are much more superior, in layout, design, architecture, and processing...a Mac laptop or desktop would be a good choice for you, because Macs are built to handle the kind of things that you are talking about..those two things are the internet and multitasking...chatting, listening to music, surfing the web, doing projects...on a Mac, you DO NOT GET VIRUSES, or spyware, or malware, or popups when you are surfing the internet, so everything runs great, Macs just work...they come preinstalled with everything you'll need...iTunes, iChat which allows you to use your AIM screenname without downloading AIM onto your computer and can verbally and visually chat with you friends, and Safari, the Mac's web browser, is absolutelly incredible...if you cannot afford a Mac as they can be pricy, then get a desktop because that seems like the more reliable way to go....preferably an HP because they are good at multitasking or a Sony if you can, or possibly an eMachines...TRUST ME WHEN I SAY DELLS SUCK my friend purchased a brand new dell, and i had to restart it three times right after setup, and no, not for any updates to take affect, i mean llike control alt delete restarting, and my other friend bout a brand new Dell desktop, spent 2700 on it, and he had to restart it five times within the first few days because it kept locking up, so if anything, Dells are problematic as well as Windows

The people telling you that you get more computer for your money with a desktop are correct.

If you really want the mobility of a laptop then I say IBM/Lenovo. I've had dozens of laptops both company owned and personal including Dell, Sony, Toshiba, etc. But the ones that lasted longest and took the most punishment without breaking were the IBMs, especially T series and R series. I worked at a startup company on a budget and we were buying used R series IBMs on eBay and I would prefer that over a brand new Sony or Dell any day.

As I type there's a used T23 with DVD and WiFi on eBay for about $230 and a T30 with DVD, WiFi, and BlueTooth for $380. If I was going to give in to my 13 year old daughter's desire for a laptop, this is what I'd be looking at.

Hey! Wait a minute... is that you?

Dell seems the choice for your age, it inexpensive compared to Lenovo (IBM). After IBM sold out to China (Lenovo) I really not sure of their quality, but, IBM did get a major Stock Incentive and I suspect they want to keep it to their advantage. I have 2 IBM Thinkpads, 2 Hewlett Packard Laptops. 1 Hewlett Packard, 2 Compaq and 1 Home Made; these are Desktops. I really not have problems with any of them. The Laptop may be harder to add on, but, today, if it have a few USB Ports you can easily connect many things, like a Webcam, Digital Camera etc. They usually are Plug & Play, plug in what you need and the Computer load it to work. Most what you say, any computer work OK. Now if you Play Games many need good Graphs Cards and Sound Cards. For music it hard to say. My IBM has nice sound for a Laptop (Altec Lansing Speakers) but, when I really want to Jam Down I took a Headphone plug to plug into the computer headphone jack and cut off the headphones and rigged the wires to attach to my AUX Input on my stereo, it is awesome!!!

You don't need a lap top at all, sounds like a desk top computer is all you need.

Don't have your parents waste their money on a laptop as it is just not a very interesting piece of equipment. For what you are doing you could have any computer out there do the same thing at half the price.

I say HP would be your choice. They are good quality and value for money, but a simple desktop/laptop type would be able to suit your needs. RAM is important and so is the processor since you like to multi-task.

DELL, Toshiba, and SONY seems to make good laptops. An Apple Notebook would also be nice, but they are a lot more expensive. Avoid Compaq, & Gateway.
