I was just sitting here watching TV and Kate Moss popped up on her usual Rimmel Ads. and it got me thinking.... I never thought she was an icon, or beautiful or ay of the other things which are attributed to her.. the media have almost made that decision for us...

Don't get me wrong I do not thing she is ugly or anything.. it is simply that it is bizarre how the media reinforces images of who they feel should have iconc status and we end up agreeing with them not because it is necessarily true but because we just get drawn into the whole idea of it...

I agree - the media are massively powerful in this society. They tell us who to like and dislike, and to a degree we go along with it.

Actually - I'll give you a classic example. David Gest on I'm a Celeb recently. According to all media reports the guy was a total and utter freak, despicable in every possible way. We were all ready to hate him on sight. In reality, he was the funniest, warmest person on that show and he now has loads of fans. Whatever you think of that show, or even him, it does demonstrate why none of us should take on trust anything that the tabloids tell us.

You bet ! It's is all prefabricated,They invest in artist's,educate and train them where necessary. And giving them the appearance that is required.befor they "launch" them
Also.. don't you ever think that anything at all,is spontaneous on TV, cause absolutely nothing is,if only for the camera movement.
Heck even the jokes that are presented as made on the spot, are practiced a few times
But this does not ends with artist's.Cause in almost the same way a political icon gets launched these days. Before any political candidate comes to the fore ,there has already been a pre-selection by the worlds most rich and powerful. So that they can be sure that nobody who might challenge the status qua to much comes to the fore.. Thats why we are always complaining there is such little difference between all parties.Guess not much is really "real" these days..

along the lines of your observation -

in the 80s and prior I remember you bought records and tapes and "hits" were decided (at least somewhat) by how many 'requests' they got at radio stations which would, in turn, increase their sales; the people had somewhat of a say

in the 90s, something changed; when you bought a cd- EVEN WHEN IT FIRST COMES OUT- even before being much at all on radio- there would be a sticker that says "INCLUDING THE #1 HIT -BLAH,BLAH,BLAH" or something to that effect

the music industry- not the people - are now completely choosing what is a "hit" ; what good music is, what is popular

our culture is decided in corporate boardrooms-period

The media is the most powerful influence we have in our teenage/adult lives and, in my opinion that type of influence is not good.
As you say, according to the papers and mags Kate Moss is "beautiful" and "sexy". I honestly see none of that in her; she is very plain looking. The same can be said for many other women who regularly appear in the tabloids.
It all reminds me of that fairy tale of "The Emperor's New Clothes" where people were so gullible they were easily led to believe that a nude man was wearing a beautiful set of clothes It took a child to embarrass everyone by pointing out the truth.

Wow, take responsiblity for yourself!

The media doesn't do anything like that, they just want you to watch more. If they give you shows you don't like, then the shows go away.

If you personally don't like some show, but 30 million other Americans do, then the show will stay.

It's freedom, and it's capitalism. Every single individual person decides "I'm gonna watch CSI" or "I'm gonna watch Katie Couric." Nobody makes you watch anything.

Some company makes an ad with Kate Moss, their sales go up, they hire Kate Moss again! Simple.

Don't blame the media, don't blame the government, don't blame anybody. Individualism. America.

They are loving the Ipswich murders. Not only to fill air time. But
to push the faces of police on us.They of course are loving it.
Don't be surprised if the next reality show is.Solve the crime with
former Inspector Plod in charge. They fell in with the labour spin
to promote Bliar. It's people who are stupid for accepting it.

i must agree with you, kate moss is a ok looking girl, not a beauty as it is played out in the media. i believe the media has made that choice for us, as with everything else. the media makes the decision for us. they try to convince us with there choices.
