Yes, for some people it is possible, but not for everyone. Not all of us learn well independently or just by reading. Some of us need to be able to ask a real person questions or have a real person demonstrate or explain topics.

This site about multiple intelligences might shed a little light on it.

It would be possible but I personally would rather have an actual teacher. I personally can't learn stuff by the book, I have to have someone present the material and just have the book as a reference or where the homework comes from (like math). Then again, I have amazing teachers at my school and even the best written book couldn't explain it as well as they can.

I believe some can - but to be honest - kids left with books to read and told to read wont read. Many of them - if not the majority of them - will choose if not required to read - to not read. However, I do believe for some kids that is true. I have long been a support of the idea that you can't create a factory model that will educate every kid in one manner that will work for all. That is why I am a support of a large number of different educational ideas to be allowed to go on simultaneously.

However, to get back you your question. I do know believe that books cannot be teacher - but can be tools for teachers to use.

Good Luck!!!

Speaking as a college professor, let me say that I tend to use the books as references, guiding students to certain parts when needed.

Some students are capable of learning straight out of the book, while others need that instructor-led guidance. And often times, I will provide information that's NOT in the book, or clarify things that the book doesn't explain well enough or in enough detail.

So teachers exist to supplement the book, and vice-verse.

Books don't always make things clear as teachers are trained to do. I have learned more from one on one experience from teachers than just reading a book (although reading is important too).

It is possible, yes, but such a thing requires a lot of motivation. This is more a part of lifelong learning than elementary or secondary learning.
The saying goes, "If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read it in English, thank a soldier."
Most peopel are not really motivated enough to self-educate themselves. It is very rare.

Who would teach them to read, and most people would not read the books. The world today is filled with morons; could you imagine if we had no teachers to teach them what little they know. I don't think some people would be able to breath without being taught.

While there are people who are visual learners there are people who learn better by having it explain to them or both shown visually and explain how they arrived there as in Mathematics namely Algebra or Geometry whild some may be able to learn from looking at the examples in the text other may need it to be explain to them by someone who is educated in that area

If one is self motivated and disciplined, I think this can be done.
For me, I want someone to help and guide me along. I may have questions the book can't answer.....
