OK Gang,

I turned on my computer yesterday, an really old clunker, but it gets the job done. Anyway, all of a sudden there was this pretty loud noise coming from the back of the tower. So, I tilted the tower and it was coming from the fan. So, I turned off the computer, and restarted it two more times with the same results. So, I guess this means I have to replace my fan, right?

Yes...This is a pretty simple task to get done.... Remove the computer case and remove the old fan... The fan is either screwed in with 4 screws or locked in with a plastic bracket... If you are new to this, maybe take a quick picture or sketch before you remove the stuff so that you can put it back together...

Bring this fan into the computer store and get the to sell you one with the same size and electrical connections.... Also make sure the fan is ball bearing and not sleeve based.... Ball bearing fans last 4 times longer....

Good luck...

First and most important thing you should know: A POWER SUPPLY TO YOU COMPUTER IS THE MOST DANGEROUS PART!
This is where you computer converts the large wall socket 120 volts to smaller 5 and 12 volts used by your computer. If you plan on replacing the power supply fan, REPLACE THE WHOLE POWER SUPPLY. If you find it to be some other fan, such as a case fan or heatsink fan, or any other fan used in your computer besides the power supply, feel free to change it. It's rather easy actually, I do it all the time to replace those noisey factory fans. Good luck and don't forget to turn off the computer before you make any hardware changes! :)

No, you might not have to. Unplug your pc and crack open the case. Grab a can or two of compressed air and go crazy... spray the heck out of everything, get all the dust and hair and cheetos out of there. spray as much inside the cracks of the fan as you can... then put it back together and start up again... if the noise is still bad (which it shouldn't) you may need to replace the fan. Also if you're the type of person that leaves his PC on the floor, MOVE IT you get a lot of dust and dirt and crap in there if you keep it on the floor. Good luck!!

There are often two fans; on ein the power supply and an external one. Most newer machines don't have the external one.

So, you can take out the power supply and try to find a replacement fan, but you're probably better off just replacing the whole power supply. (Fiarly easy to do - usually four screws plus all of the power connectors.)

Before doing all that though, make sure nothing fell into the path of the fan itself. (But you probably already thought of that.)

It may need to be cleaned. Also if you keep your computer on for too long it can make the fan sound like that. Or it could be over heated, it's spinning faster to cool it down. Make sure your computer isn't near a heater or vent.

If you are worried about it, find a local computer shop to see if someone can take a look at it. They could tell your for sure what's wrong and what steps you need to take to replace it.

It could be time for a newer computer :)

Merry Christmas!!!

Yes. It could be the fan on the power supply or the fan on the processor. You could the fans and see if that fixes the noise.

open your case up and see if your fan is spinning... the power connection might have come unhooked from the mobo.. check out the problem before you just go start replacing parts. Something might have just gotten stuck in the fan blades..

I don't know if this will help or not. But one day I plugged my fan into the wrong molex power connector, and this thing was just like a blowing real hard and fast. Make sure its in fan only plug...

You may not have to replace it. You probably just have to cleann it, something may have gotten cught in it. But you said that it was pretty loud, so it may be that a bearing has gotten loose, and in that case, you'll have to replace it.

More or less..you'll have to replace the fan. They're a dime a dozen really.
