NO... That won't work.

The only way this could conceivably work is if the fireplace was made for both applications, which some of them are. You will also need an actual chimney that would be connected to the top knock out of the fireplace. This chimney would be a prefab stainless steel insulated chimney with a clearance of not less than 2 inches to anything combustible all the way up through the roof.

Do not attempt to extend your vent up the side of the house and use that for a chimney. This vent is to expel spent gases and introduce fresh air for the gas to burn.

This cannot be a real question and that licenced general contractor is a farce. You'll burn your house down if you try it.

Like Bono said, you will need to look at the chimney. But even if it is larger than 2 or 3 inches I'd check with the manufacturer of the pipe to make sure it can take the heat.

I personally wouldn't do it, I can see that causing problems.

YES, IF IT WAS ORIGINALLY A REGULAR, UL LISTED MANUFACTURED FIREPLACE, OR ONE HANDMADE BY THE BUILDER FOR WOOD!

LOOK AT THE CHIMNEY..., IF YOU HAVE A SMALL 2 TO 3" PIPE EXITING.... THEN NO!

NO, you cant use it. Burning wood produces 10 times the amount of heat in all directions than a controlled gas flame. YOU WILL BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!
