I have a LAN that uses a fiber optic backbone. I want to buy a Gigabit fiber optic switch but not sure if it is compatible with 100MB fiber connection. All my switches are connected with a 100BASE FX fiber optic module. I am expanding my network but want to use 1000BASE instead to 100 BASE.

Why bother with the upgrade if you're going to do that? Just stick with the 100BASE-FX.

Unless you upgrade your core switch and all of the closets to 1000BASE-FX, you're wasting your money as you will get NO benefit from the upgrade at all.

Don't shortcut it. Do it right, or don't do it at all.

You can use a media converter but the 100base fx module will just be a bottleneck and you will have wasted too much money by then..
