Traffic during the Christmas-New Year break is always bad at a certain location... usually around the Sacramento-Tahoe area. It really depends on the weather. Have you looked at the forecasts? But your trip up to Sacramento shouldn't be bad. I usually go around that time and I get stuck a while after I pass Sacramento, usually due to snow. Check out the weather first.

traffic to tahoe from the bay area is usually crazy from the now until after new years...especially if the weather turns bad.

probably pretty bad. bay area traffic is bad, when everybdoy is trying to go visit some snow.
