You're going to have to be a bit more specific regarding the "appropriate" portion of your question. You could be talking about a book being age-appropriate or it being morally appropriate. Or about a book being appropriate for one's reading comprehension level. Reading reviews may or may not be helpful. You might be able to see that it's a book geared towards the right age group or grade level.

Barnes and Nobel put up reviews from several sources for their books, including readers. You can get a vastly different call on any one book.
