I had a red eared slider for 15 years. I bought the aquatic turtle food and I dropped the food into the water. Only feed what they can eat at the time of feeding.

Also, I mixed calcium powder into the can. They need that to keep their shell strong. If you drop the food with the calcium powder, the turtle will eat it right way. So you don't really need to worry about powder coming off the food. It does not have time to.

Also, don't power feed the turtle. You don't need to feed them everyday. I used to feed mine every 2 or 3 days. --Advice from the pet store when they found out how big it was after one year time. They said that they only fed their turtles once a week.

As for the food, I would get it at your local pet store in a language that you understand. How do you know exactly what you are giving her/him?

The brown spots - I would check with the vet. But mine had a pale brown spot on it's underneath. It was just normal coloring in the shell.

I am not sure of the size of yours but when mine passed on, she was in a 55 gallon tank. Be prepared for larger tanks in the future.

Good luck with your new friend. Mine was awesome with a great personality! Very friendly and sociable. I miss her dearly.

First, a water turtle CAN NOT eat unless the food is in the water. They can't swallow it, so yes...feed your turtle IN water. Secondly, if the brown spots are soft...your turtle could have shell rot and you need to take it to the vet. To prevent shell problems, make sure the water is clean, deep enough for the turtle to swim, that you have a U.V. lamp, a heat lamp, and a place for your turtle to get COMPLETELY out of the water to bask under the light. One way to help KEEP your tank cleaner is to feed your turtle in the sink. Just plug the sink and fill it so it covers the turtle's shell, and put her/him in there with the turtle pellets for about 45 minutes to an hour. In fall and winter, feed your turtle twice a week. In spring and summer, feed ever other day. Good luck!

What kind of turtle is it?

The food pellets should be dropped into the water. Most turtles will not do well on a diet of just pellets, however.

Attached are a couple of good websites you ca try for more information.
