I had two keys for a 1997 2500 Ram Pickup Truck. I lost the first one, and was only using the one. Now I lost that one. I already know I'm a dumba** for not making a new one right away so you dont have to restate the facts. Can you get a key made up by going down to the dealer and using the VIN # could they get you a new key or would I have to change the whole ignition? Thanks

You can but only from the dealership and you will need ID and proof of ownership. If you could get a key made by producing a VIN # wouldn't that make car theft a lot easier!!!! VIN # are located in plain sight on the vehicle.
If you bought the truck used and not from a dealership. You will still need to go to a Dodge dealer, and produce, ID, proof of ownership, and registration papers.
If you bought the truck new, ALL keys come with a small ID tag with a # on it , you can get a key made by producing that also, it has the copy code for your vehicle.

Meaning if you do not have a key, can a copy be made? Depends on the type of key. If it's one of the high tech ones- probably not But if it is a standard key, a mold can be taken of the lock and the key made from the mold. This is often a pricey proposition though, so it may be cheaper to simply get the locks replaced or re-keyed. Call your local dealership or locksmith and they will tell you what to do and, in the case of the dealership, if there is anything you need to bring.

They certainly *used* to be able to do this. The key info was in a database with VIN and other information, but too many crooks took advantage of the system, and now it is more difficult--you'll have to call your dealer. You'll probably have to pay a fee as well. Sorry.

Yes you should be able too. If you go to your dealer, they will prob have your truck in the system. If not, they can look it up at any dealer and find the info they need to make a key!

Depending on the type of key. (regular/remote control) You may be able to have a locksmith make one for you.
Although, I would check with the dealer first.
