That's because you have not yet found work that is fulfilling. You do need to work - work is an inevitable aspect of the human condition (The problem of man is that he can't stay alone in a room for 15 minutes, doing nothing - Blaise Pascal) - Sometimes in life, you need to work simply to survive, or to maintain a standard of living you are comfortable with.
But work is also about accomplish yourself. Not only about finding what you can be given, but also what you can give back to the world around you. Once you find a position in which you both get and give, you will have fond fulfilling work. Keep looking - I disagree with the idea work has to be a disagreeable chore, although some people, because of their temperament, have a harder time than others being satisfied at work.

P.S. The Chinese have a proverb: "The secret of happiness is not to do what you like, but to like what you do". If, in the meantime, you find yourself doing something you dislike, don't denigrate it. Do it well and do it with dignity, you will find yourself appreciating it more, and you will find your employer more willing to listen to you. If you're a floor sweeper, get to know your floor. Strive to be the best floor-sweeper you can be, and don't make it an excuse for showing up at work disheveled and lethargic.

There is dignity in every type of work and it is one of life's pervasive responsibilities. Work is not a precondition; it is a fact of our existence. Ask yourself this - if you didn't have a thing and were standing by the side of the road, without clothes, without anything, what would you do then? Hint: Who is John Galt?

Much like the first answer, it's not so much the work that shows you're an adult. By wanting to just avoid something you don't like, that is definitive of immaturity. To live in this world, you need things. As a child, you can mooch off your parents. As an adult you need to take care of yourself. So yes- to be an adult, you need to "work" to make enough "money" for the stuff you need in life.

Figure out what you enjoy doing, then find a way to make money from it. No, meaningless work for enough money is not a prerequisite for adulthood.

the prerequisite for adulthood is the acceptance of responsibility and the willingness to do things that have to be done regardless of whether you like it or not. your unwillingness to work and your desire to avoid it reveals that you are a child.

Yeah, it's pretty necessary.
